Anorexia Nervosa

I've been browsing and fixing my files on my pc and one of the most scattered files are my student files. Me as a graduate of nursing, you will expect medical notes/files in my pc, these are lectures, homeworks or projects we have here in school. I just thought of sharing my researches in the world rather that just leave my files in my pc and get rotten. This is one of them. Anorexia Nervosa: one of the most common eating disorders, person with this disorder are not aware of their condition. If you know someone that you could relate to this article, maybe you could help them.

The word anorexia means "loss of appetite," Anorectics—95 percent of whom are women—often have a normal appetite but because of an abnormal fear of being fat and a distorted body image, they're convinced that they're obese and refuse to eat. Anorexia is considered a psychological disorder because there is no known physical cause for the extreme weight loss associated with the condition. You may be anorectic if you:

• Lose at least 25 percent of your original weight.
• Have not had a physical or mental illness that could have caused the weight loss.
• Think of yourself as fat even if you're not.
• Fear being overweight and losing control over your eating behavior.
• Refuse to eat enough to maintain or return to a normal weight.
• Fail to menstruate for at least three consecutive months.
• Feel that all of your energy is going into controlling your weight.
• Feel that staying hungry is the only way you can avoid becoming fat.

She was afraid to eat.

She lost 25% of her body weight.

She strove for perfection.

Her sexual desires disappeared.

She had angry outbursts.

She stopped having her periods.

She felt isolated.

She was always cold.

She desired control.

She felt weak.

She denied her hunger.

Fine hairs grew on her entire body.

She was depressed.

She suffered from insomnia.

She had a distorted body image.

Her heartbeat was irregular

She craved attention.

She almost died.

The Great Wheel of China

BEIJING (Reuters) - You've climbed the
Great Wall of China, now Beijing wants you to "fly" the Great Wheel of China. Higher than both the London Eye and the Singapore Flyer, which opens in March, the Beijing Great Wheel will tower 208 metres (682 ft) when finished in 2009, executives said on Monday, which would make it the highest and largest in the world.

The giant ferris wheel will have 48 air conditioned observation capsules, each of which can carry up to 40 passengers, and on a good day even the Great Wall is expected to be visible in the mountains to Beijing's north.

"The wheel itself is a nice add-on to the city. It's a new icon for the city," Great Wheel Corp Chief Executive Officer Stephan Matter told Reuters ahead of the ground-breaking ceremony.

The wheel will stand in eastern Beijing's Chaoyang Park, where beach volleyball events will take place at next year's Olympics, and have far greater capacity than the London Eye, Matter said.

"The capsule in London caters for 25. Ours will cater for 40 people. It's like a little bus. It's 18 tonnes heavy. It's like your living room," he added.

Costing a total of around 200 million euros (139 million pounds), tickets will go for about 100 yuan (6 pounds) a head, Matter said, though final prices have yet to be decided.

"The Beijing one will be very affordable," he added.

The experience will be like flying, said chairman Florian Bollen, whose company is also involved in the Singapore wheel.

"It will allow the people of Beijing to rise up and see the city from a completely new perspective," he said. "It is a flight." - yahoonews

Say Hello to Snuppy...

A MAN'S best friend has joined the long list of animals that have been cloned in the laboratory.
But the scientists behind the world's first cloned dog have warned that the procedure is too dangerous to create carbon copies of favourite pets.

Snuppy, short for Seoul National University puppy, initially stirred admiration among scientists as dogs are among the trickiest of animals to clone.
The dog, grown from a single cell taken from the ear of a 3-y
ear-old male Afghan, marks a milestone in the race to fabricate genetically identical dogs for research and as companion animals.

Since the anouncement of Dolly the sheep in 1997 scientists have cloned many different species, including mice, rats, cows, pigs, rabbits, cats, a mule, horses and a gaur - an endangered ox.

However, despite several attempts, a cloned dog has proved elusive because of the difficulty of maturing canine eggs in the artificial surroundings of a cloning laboratory.

Snuppy was born in April and was one of two cloned dog embryos to be delivered alive. The second, born in May, died of pneumonia three weeks after birth.

However, in total the scientists created 1,095 cloned embryos and implanted all them into the wombs of 123 canine surrogates.

Yet only three pregnancies were confirmed, one of which ended in a miscarriage.

Professor Ian Wilmut of Edinburgh University, who cloned Dolly the sheep, said that Professor Hwang seems to have successfully overcome the technical problems of cloning dogs by using a source of high-quality eggs.

Talking Cat???

I just don't know what to say... I'm speechless.. :p haha..

Cat Facts

· Ailurophilia is the "love of cats."

· The American cat population reached nearly 68 million in 1996. American Demographics magazine estimates that's about 200 million kitty yawns per hour and a whopping 425 million catnaps each day!

· A cat's heart beats twice as fast as a human heart, at 110 to 140 beats per minute.

· 25% of cat owners blow dry their cats hair after a bath.

· The largest cat breed is the Ragdoll. Males weigh twelve to twenty pounds, with females weighing ten to fifteen pounds. The smallest cat breed is the Singapura. Males weigh about six pounds while females weigh about four pounds.

· If your cat is near you, and her tail is quivering, this is the greatest expression of love your cat can give you. If her tail starts thrashing, her mood has changed --- Time to distance yourself from her.

· Don't pick a kitten or a cat up by the scruff of its neck; only mother cats can do this safely, and only with their kittens.

· Cats knead with their paws when they're happy.

· Your cat loves you and can "read" your moods. If you're sad or under stress, you may also notice a difference in your cat's behavior.

· The domestic cat is the only cat species able to hold its tail vertically while walking. All wild cats hold their tails horizontally or tucked between their legs while walking.

· During her productive life, one female cat could have more than 100 kittens.

· In 1952, a Texas Tabby named Dusty set the record by having more than 420 kittens before having her last litter at age 18.

· The largest known litter (with all surviving) was that of a Persian in South Africa named Bluebell. Bluebell gave birth to 14 kittens in one litter!

· A cat will amost never "meow" at another cat. This sound is reserved for humans.

· Know how old your cat really is. If your cat is 3, your cat is 21 in human years. If your cat is 8, your cat is 40 in human years. If your cat is 14, your cat is 70 in human years.

· The average age for an indoor cat is 15 years, while the average age for an outdoor cat is only 3 to 5 years.

· The oldest cat on record was Puss, from England, who died in 1939 just one day after her 36th birthday. (We wish we could have them all that long!)

· The weirdest cat on record was a female called Mincho who went up a tree in Argentina and didn't come down again until she died six years later. While treed, she managed to have three litters with equally ambitious dads

· People who own pets live longer, have less stress, and have fewer heart attacks.

· A cat will kill it's prey based on movement, but may not necessarily recognize that prey as food. Realizing that prey is food is a learned behavior.

· The greatest number of mice killed by one cat? 28,899! Towser, a tortoise-shell tabby in charge of rodent control in Scotland, killed 28,899 mice in her 21 years. This is about four mice per day, every day, for 21 years. Towser died in 1987.

· The first cat show was held in 1895 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York.

· "Sociable" cats will follow you from room to room to monitor your activities throughout the day.

· Give your cat a quality scratching post to deter her from scratching your furniture. Still scratching? Try putting lemon scent or orange scent on the area. Cats hate these smells.

· Cats get their sense of security from your voice. Talk to your cats! And be mindful of your tone of voice. Cats know when you're yelling at them (though they may not care).

· The more cats are spoken to, the more they will speak to you.

· It is believed that a white cat sitting on your doorstep just before your wedding is a sign of lasting happiness. White cats are a symbol of good luck in America, while black cats are a sign of bad luck.

· Cats are partially color blind. They have the equivalency of human red/green color blindness. (Reds appear green and greens appear red; or shades thereof.)

· Cats don't see "detail" very well. To them, their person may appear hazy when standing in front of them.

· Cats need 1/6th the amount of light that humans do to see. Their night vision is amazing!

· Cats can see up to 120 feet away. Their peripheral vision is about 285 degrees.

· The color of a kitten's eyes will change as it grows older.

· A group of kittens is called a "kindle."

· A group of grown cats is called a "clowder."

· Many experts report that cats will purr when feeling any intense emotion (pleasure or pain).

· Cats are the sleepiest of all mammals. They spend 16 hours of each day sleeping. With that in mind, a seven year old cat has only been awake for two years of its life!

· Cats are more active during the evening hours.
Cats spend 30% of their waking hours grooming themselves.
Backward-pointing spikes on a cat's tongue aid in their grooming.

· The average cat weighs 12 pounds.

· If you can't feel your cat's ribs, she's too heavy.

· According to the Guiness Book of World Records, the heaviest cat on record was Himmy, an Australian cat, who weighed 46 pounds, 15.25 ounces in 1986. Himmy's waist was 33 inches! The previous record-holder had been Spice, a ginger-and-white tom cat from Connecticut, who weighed 43 pounds when he died in 1977.

· The tiniest cat on record was Tinker Toy from Illinois. A male Himalayan-Persian, he weighed 1 pound, 8 ounces fully grown and was 7.25" long and 2.75" tall!

· A flashlight makes a great cat toy! Turn the flashlight on in a dark room, and watch your feline "chase" the beam of light!

· Egyptians shaved their eyebrows as a sign of mourning when they lost a beloved cat.

· Cat's urine glows under a black light.

· Cats respond most readily to names that end in an "ee" sound.

· Many cats love having their forehead gently stroked.

· It has been scientifically proven that stroking a cat can lower one's blood pressure.

· If your cat snores or rolls over on his back to expose his belly, it means he trusts you. Cats respond better to women than to men, probably due to the fact that women's voices have a higher pitch.

Stupidity...

This is a chapter of my life called... STUPIDITY!!!! After class I had to go somewhere and I need to change my clothes... Without knowing, I left my money in the comfort room.. it's just 800pesos.. not that big.. but guys it's still 800.. you can't pick up that amount anywhere right?!? I was very far from my school when I realized that my money was no where to be found in my bag nor in my wallet, then I realized that I left it in the comfort room... I thought of calling my friends.. hoping that they are still in school.. but no one answered my calls... So I decided to come back, and on my way I tried to be sedulous and think positive, but still thought of how stupid I am.. when I was dropped in the school I ran so fast hoping that my 8oo is still there.

When I got in the comfort room, the cubicle where I changed my clothes and left my money was occupied, I was about to knock on the cubicle but it opened suddenly then came a woman and I asked quickly if she found a money she also answered quickly saying "oh.. the 800????" Oh my God, is this true...??? I just thought of that and I can't believe that I left an 800 for a long time maybe around 20 -30 minutes
because of my stupidity and when i came back.. only one person went on that cubicle but I'm not so sure If she's the only one, maybe other's just didn't notice it or just don't mind it.. I don't know... I really just thanked that person a lot... even if I didn't got her name I know that she knows how thankful I am... Call me stupid.. I don't mind.. at least i got my money back! wehehe!!! :p
